There is a sacred quality to storytelling, and we know that this activity often took place in sacred places, typically around the fire or under a tree. The focal point of the flame provides a backdrop to the storyteller who shares wisdom with their students who, in their turn, become storytellers for the next generation.
It is in the manner that that culture replicates itself through the DNA of myth. The often tangential nature of storytelling, its use of metaphor, its indirect attack on the topic, all combine to make storytelling an effective way to address topic that might be otherwise too confrontational to address head on
Campfires are examples of archetypal learning spaces suited to different forms of interaction and made popular by school planners and designers including Prakash Nair and Randall Fielding, and the futurist David Thornburg. The concepts have been used to inform the design of both physical and virtual environments.
