Understanding by design is a planning approach for improving student achievement. This is because the teacher has the end result as the focus of their educational planning. The Framework and accompanying design process for thinking decisively about unit lesson planning is completed in a backwards manner.
This is done in order to design learning activities specifically for the identified desired results. The acceptable evidence is produced by the students because the teacher has intentionally designed the learning experiences. Understanding by Design focuses on teaching to achieve student understanding. The main aim of Teaching for Understanding to is equip students with the skills to take what they know, and what they are learning and to make connections between the two and real world examples and situations. It is this making of these meaningful connections that illustrate that learning has taken place.
