Educational Theory
One of the benefits of implementing Innovative Learning Environments (ILE) is the opportunity to evaluate our own pedagogical practices and to identify the basis of those practices. We all studied learning theories at university but often we have not had an opportunity to revisit them.
Another conversation that is had in the transition to Innovative Learning Environments is around Metacognition. We need to have conversations with our teachers, our students and our communities about the nature of learning and what that looks like in our learning environments.
A conversation about metacognition is a fabulous opportunity to really deconstruct the learning process and to develop an understanding of what it means to learn and a common language within your learning community.
Pedagogical Models
It is also an opportunity to investigate other pedagogical models that we have not used previously. Below is listed number of pedagogical practices that have been identified by educators. Some basic introductory information about each of these pedagogical approaches has been provided.
This information is a brief starting point only. If any of these pique you interest then these resources should be a starting point for further research. This is not an exhaustive list by any means and these pedagogical approaches are by no means the only approaches that teachers are currently exploring.
The conversations about pedagogy, however, should always be the starting point when we are discussing innovative learning environments.
Teaching Strategies
As well as Pedagogical Models we also have specific teaching strategies that teachers incorporate into the classroom practice. Some of these can enhance the learning outcomes for students.
