Indoor/Outdoor spaces can provide students with a sense of independence and trust whilst still being in visual contact with teachers. Outdoor learning spaces and courtyards can be directly linked to group learning spaces, project spaces or specialist spaces. This connection encourages positive relationships between students and their natural environment.
These outdoor spaces can be formal or informal and should be designed to provide alternative learning spaces, opportunities for authentic learning experiences and connections with nature. These outdoor spaces should not be restricted to particular learning areas but rather be used for alternative learning spaces for a variety of pedagogical modes.
Glazing and opening doors to allow students to move between indoor and outdoor settings to access fresh air, daylight, space to burn off pent up energy, and the ability to choose settings where they will learn best.
