The mapping of the different pedagogical modes within specific learning environments allows teachers to identify and evaluate not only their own pedagogies but also the student use of the physical space. This is important if a teacher is attempting to introduce contemporary pedagogical models into their own teaching practice.
By evaluating how both they and their students use the learning environment small changes can be implemented in order to change pedagogical practice.
Mapping Pedagogies

If teachers become spatially literate they can start to make decisions about which spaces best suit a specific pedagogical mode. We see this already in some schools. Teachers are designing learning activities that purposefully make use of specific environments. Over time the students start to assess which learning environment may be best suited to specific learning activities. This is the ideal where teachers and students are spatially aware and take advantage of this knowledge to intentionally develop strategies to enhance the learning opportunities.
Workshop Overview
This workshop is designed to allow teachers to;
- explore the notion of mapping their own learning environments
- become spatially aware of their learning environment
- investigate ways to make use of each of the pedagogical modes
- intentionally design learning activities to make use of all available space
- start to articulate their own pedagogical use of space
By the end of this workshop teachers will be able to identify the different pedagogical modes they use in their classroom. They will be able to identify those which they fell most comfortable in and those which they tend to struggle with. Teachers will be able to articulate their pedagogical models and evaluate the relevance of their current use of space and practices.
